My Parents Didn’t Think It Could Happen…
By Sierra L. | September 21, 2011
And if you’d seen my room a week ago, I bet you would have agreed with them: There was no way I would fit everything into my dorm room.
I’m from North Carolina, and in August we had a week which will go down in history as “tornado-earthquake-hurricane week.” And yes, we were hit by all three within seven days. And no kidding, last week my room looked like it had just barely survived such a catastrophe.
You couldn’t see my floor except for the stepping stones I had carved out between piles of clothes, books, and bedding. My dear mother opened the door, took one look, and fled for her life! I have no idea why…
Okay, so maybe I slightly procrastinated in packing…
One of my younger sisters is planning to move into my bedroom, so everything not going to college with me was going into storage. I swear, I had no idea I owned so much stuff! After sorting, packing, organizing, moving, discarding, and packing some more, I was left with this:
So, Friday night I pulled my first official college-related all-nighter, and by 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, I was ready to leave for The Ohio State University! Granted, it was two hours later than we had originally intended to leave, but hey, better late than never, right?
My Dad started packing the van and decided to gently break the news: “Sierra, there is absolutely NO WAY all this will fit in your dorm.” And, if you had seen the back of our van when we left home, you probably would have agreed.
My two roommates and I ended up arriving at our dorm within an hour of each other: around 10 a.m. on Sunday. Stuff was scattered helter-skelter! Since I was the third to arrive, my stuff had to stay outside in the hall for a couple hours until they had enough of theirs put away that mine fit in the room. It was another hour before I even saw my desk for the first time: it was literally buried! My parents swore they’d be taking back some of my boxes. It didn’t look like ANY of my carefully, thoughtfully, lovingly packed college-survival items would fit in the room (which definitely looked bigger in the floor plan on the housing website than it did in real life).
BUT, a miracle happened! My room grew in size between 10 a.m. and noon. My roomies and I moved some furniture around, stacked some bins, and filled our closets. And I’m telling you, my parents didn’t think it could happen, but somehow, everything fit!
And – wait for this! – there was room for more!!!
Which is awesome, because the next day after the Student Involvement Fair, I came back with two bags full of fliers and free stuff… so now my room no longer looks this beautiful… but as soon as I finish sorting, organizing, moving, discarding, and just generally finding a home for all my new stuff, my room will look beautiful again.
Hey, my parents didn’t think it could happen before and it did, so who’s to say it can’t happen again?
