Scheduling

Scheduling classes
Students who are admitted to the Academy program will attend an orientation program several weeks before the start of the term of enrollment. During the orientation, students will receive information about getting books free of charge (Option B), using campus resources, navigating campus, and selecting classes. The Academy Academic Advisor will assist students in selecting classes, and will have the final say in the number and type of classes a student may take in a given semester.

Before scheduling Academy classes, students may first be required to:

  • Complete college prep curriculum in the related subject area. For example, students can take Academy classes in math or English as long as they have fulfilled the college prep curriculum requirement in the subject area. (See Courses)
  • Complete required pre-requisite courses.

Students may not be able to enroll in courses for a variety of reasons, including:

  • A course may not be offered every semester.
  • A course does not fit into a student's schedule.
  • The class may be full.
  • The class may be restricted to students in a particular major.

How many classes can Academy students take?
College classes are very different from high school classes. A full-time load for an Ohio State student is 12–15 hours, which is 4–5 classes in a 14-week semester. However, Academy students are generally NOT full-time students at Ohio State. While high school students are used to having an entire academic year in which to learn material for a class, Academy students must learn the same amount of material in only 14 weeks.

Keeping in mind the difficulty of college course work, the Academy Advisor at each campus will help each Academy student set up a schedule that takes into account his or her overall course load, involvement in extracurricular activities, and any other obligations.
