Transfer admission

Admission criteria

Your academic record will be reviewed to determine your eligibility for admission to the university. Once it is determined that you are admissible, you will be considered for enrollment in the college of your intended major (read about college enrollment criteria).

Non-academic factors may also be considered if:

  • you have demonstrated outstanding talent in a particular area
  • you have significant work experience
  • your academic performance may have been affected by physical, mental, or learning environment factors
  • you are eligible for organized support services at Ohio State

Admission to the university

Applying to the Columbus campus

If you have earned at least 30 semester or 45 quarter hours after high school graduation, you will be considered for admission on a competitive basis.

If you have earned 1 to 29 semester or 1 to 44 quarter hours, we will review your academic performance in college and high school and your performance on the ACT or SAT to determine your eligibility for admission.

If you are currently enrolled in your first term of college, both your academic performance in high school and your performance on the ACT or SAT will determine your eligibility for admission.

Applying to a regional campus

If you have earned at least a 2.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) on your college course work, we will review your academic performance in college to determine your eligibility for admission.

Additional requirements

  • Ohio State requires that you receive a diploma from a chartered high school or GED to enroll.
  • If you have completed any course work at a school outside of the United States, you must submit an official transcript from that institution. Foreign language documents must be translated into English by the issuing institution, an authorized translator, or a teacher of the language.

         Read about special requirements, if English is not your native language. 

If English is not your native language, you must submit a score of 550 or higher on the paper-based TOEFL, 79 or higher on the Internet-based TOEFL, 79 or higher on the MELAB, 6.5 or higher on the IELTS, 21 or higher on the English section of the ACT, or 500 or higher on the Critical Reading section of the SAT. Will my credit transfer to Ohio State?

Course credit will transfer to Ohio State if the course was taken at a regionally accredited institution, the course was non-remedial, and you received a C- or better (in a few cases, a D or D+ may transfer; download Transfer Credit Policy, page 7 for information). In many cases, credit for equivalent courses is received when transfer credit is awarded. After you’ve applied

Once we receive your application 

Within 1 to 5 days, you will receive e-mail acknowledgment that your application was received. You will be given an Ohio State Username and OSU ID and instructions for monitoring the status of your application.

Within approximately 4 to 6 weeks after we have received all of your required documents, your online application status will reflect one of the following admission decisions:

Admit — Congratulations! You have been admitted to Ohio State. A transfer credit evaluation is on the way.

Denial — At this time, you do not meet our admission requirements. To be considered for another semester, you may wish to remain enrolled at your current college or university and improve your academic record. If you are not currently enrolled, you may wish to enroll at another college or university and improve your academic profile. In both cases, you will need to contact us to update your application for a future semester.

Confirming your enrollment

You will be mailed an Acceptance Fee Statement requesting a $100 nonrefundable fee to confirm your enrollment.

Delaying your enrollment

If you choose not to attend Ohio State during the semester for which you have applied, you must contact Undergraduate Admissions to update your application to be considered for another semester. Your application fee applies for the next two consecutive semesters.

Orientation

You are required to attend a transfer student orientation session prior to the start of classes. During this program, you will take any necessary placement tests (English, math, and/or foreign language) and work with an academic advisor to schedule courses. The Orientation office will contact you with available date and time options.

Living on campus

Columbus campus transfer students are not required to live on campus. If you request campus housing on your application, you will receive information after receiving your notice of admission. For more information about campus living, visit University Residences. Please note campus housing is offered on a space-available basis. Regional campus housing is available at Mansfield, Newark, and ATI. Contact those campuses directly for more information.

Transfer scholarship information
Transfer students may be eligible for certain scholarships, including Cooperative Scholarship Housing, special-eligibility scholarships, and departmental scholarships. Read more about these awards at undergrad.osu.edu/scholarships.

If you are changing from one Ohio State campus to another, talk to your academic advisor about what steps to take.
