Application requirements

So you’ve read the admissions criteria and you’re ready to apply? Great! To be considered for admission to Ohio State, all required application materials must be received in the office of Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience by your application deadline.

Required application materials
We strongly recommend that you keep copies of all submitted materials. All submitted documents become the property of The Ohio State University.
Freshman applicants

  1. Completed admissions application (apply.osu.edu).
    Before you submit your application, you will be charged a nonrefundable application processing fee of $60 ($40 if you are applying to enroll winter or spring quarter 2012). This fee cannot be waived or deferred and is valid for one year. Your application will not be reviewed until this fee is paid.
  2. Copy of your senior year course schedule, if you are presently in high school.
  3. College Prep Form (downloadable below), completed and signed by your school counselor.
  4. Official transcript of your high school course work and a profile of your high school. Official transcripts have either an embossed seal or signature of a certifying official from your school. Faxed transcripts will not be accepted.
  5. Official ACT or SAT scores with writing. We must receive official scores, sent directly from the testing agency. Scores from transcripts will not be considered. Applicants who will have been out of high school for two or more years by their term of enrollment are not required to submit scores.

Additional application requirements:

  • If you took college courses while in high school, you must submit official transcripts of your college course work.
  • If you have completed any course work at a school outside of the United States, you must submit an official transcript from that institution. Foreign language documents must be translated into English by the issuing institution, an authorized translator, or a teacher of the language.
  • If English is not your native language, you must submit a score of:
    • 550 or higher on the paper-based TOEFL or 79 or higher on the Internet-based TOEFL
    • 79 or higher on the MELAB
    • 6.5 or higher on the IELTS
    • 21 or higher on the English section of the ACT or 500 or higher on the Critical Reading section of the SAT
Transfer applicants

  1. Completed and signed application form (apply.osu.edu).
  2. $60 nonrefundable application fee (check or money order made payable to The Ohio State University). If you apply online, you may pay by credit card or electronic check.
  3. Personal statement (required for students whose academic records include interruptions in education; optional for others).
  4. Official transcript from each college or university you have attended. Official transcripts must be sent directly from your college; no faxed transcripts will be accepted.
  5. Official transcript of your high school course work. Official transcripts have either an embossed seal or signature of a certifying official from your school; no faxed transcripts will be accepted. You do not need to submit a high school transcript if you:
    • have completed at least 45 quarter or 30 semester hours of college-level courses, or
    • are applying to a regional campus and graduated from high school before April 1, 1984, or
    • are applying to the Agricultural Technical Institute (ATI) for the Associate of Applied Science degree program
  6. Official ACT or SAT scores. Only ACT and SAT scores sent from the testing agency are accepted; scores from transcripts are not used). Ohio State college codes: ACT = 3312, SAT = 1592. You are not required to submit scores if you:
    • have completed at least 45 quarter or 30 semester hours of college-level courses since graduating from high school, or
    • are applying to a regional campus, or
    • graduated from high school two or more years prior to your first quarter of planned enrollment at Ohio State

    7. Additional application requirements:

  1. Completed admissions application (apply.osu.edu).
    Before you submit your application, you will be charged a nonrefundable application processing fee of $70 ($50 if you are applying to enroll winter or spring quarter 2012). This fee cannot be waived or deferred and is valid for one year. Your application will not be reviewed until this fee is paid.
  2. For freshman applicants—high school documents. Include any official university transcripts for course work taken while attending high school/secondary school, grades 9–12.
  3. For transfer applicants—university or post-secondary institution transcript and, if awarded, the diploma, certificate, or diploma statement. Transfer students with fewer than 30 transferable semester hours must also submit high school/secondary school documents.
  4. Official SAT or ACT scores with writing for freshman and transfer applicants with fewer than 30 transferable semester hours. Official scores must be reported directly from the testing agency; self-reported scores and copies are not considered official.
  5. Official proof of English language skills, usually TOEFL scores.
  6. A completed Affidavit of Financial Support form for each sponsor. Download the form at the bottom of this page.
  7. Supporting bank statements showing financial support for the first year of study.
  8. A completed College Prep Form, only if attending high school in the U.S. Download the form at the bottom of this page.

Please do not send photographs, portfolios, or additional personal items unless requested by Undergraduate Admissions.

Applying online

It’s easy to apply online at apply.osu.edu. The following directions can help if you get stuck:

Directions for applying online 
  1. Go to apply.osu.edu and read “Account Directions and Instructions” and create your account.
    The account lets you save the application so you can complete it over multiple sessions and from different computers.
  2. Select Undergraduate Applications, then either Domestic Applicant or International Applicant.
  3. Read the note about double-submitting. Once you understand the message, click I Agree.
  4. International students will now see their Application Menu, which includes instructions, support materials, and the international application. If you are a domestic student, click Freshman or Transfer Student. You will now see an Application Menu, which includes instructions, support materials, and the appropriate application.
  5. Once you’ve completed the application, you’ll be asked to “save, pay, and send.”
  6. Read application instructions for information about other required materials.

Important! Those attending a U.S. high school must submit a College Prep Form to their school counselors. The form requests that an official high school transcript and other required information be sent to Ohio State. This form is the only way your high school will know you’ve applied to Ohio State.
