Cirque Du Awesome

 Written by    September 18, 2013

I really hope you’re the kind of person that loves to take leaps and loves to try something new. And if you are, in the past month, there was an opportunity as such for you. I call it Cirque Du Awesome.

Let me start with what Cirque Du Soleil is, because I did not know three weeks ago. I thought it was a circus. While a circus could be equally as fun, and acts in Cirque could in fact BE IN a circus, Cirque Du Soleil is most definitely not a circus. It’s better.

Cirque is a theatrical show of acrobats, contortionists, dancers, gymnasts, and others of the like. There are no animal tricks, clowns, or magic tricks (unless you consider the way these people move their bodies magic). There are different themes to each Cirque Du Soleil show. There is “O”, and “Quidam”, and “Alegria” and more and more and more. The one that has come to Columbus is “Totem,” which explores the evolutions of man and culture.

Now that you have a general idea of what Cirque is, you should also know that part of its definition may not include but should include “AWESOME.” Just plain awesome.

Watching people do things with their body that you once thought was impossible is an overwhelming feeling. There’s no other way to describe it.

For example, my most mind-blowing part of Totem (SPOILER ALERT) is when there is a couple rollerskating. And they’re not just doing some old-fashioned, ordinary rollerskating. They’re rollerskating together, on a five foot by five foot raised drum. They did a lot of spinning moves together, where the male would hold the female in ways you didn’t think she would be able to hold on. And it’s blowing my mind. The whole time. HOWEVER, as much as you think they’re doing the impossible….they cross the line. They pull out a trick that skipped so many steps from “wow” to “I can’t handle this, I need to leave.” I honestly felt like I needed to leave the Grand Chapiteau because I thought she was going to get hurt. I won’t tell you what she did. That’s how bad I want you to go see this show.

In addition to the incredible acts, there are so many more breathtaking things about Cirque Du Soleil. The production alone is unbelievable. Me being the production girl I am, I enjoyed the stage mechanics, the sound, the lighting, the choreography. All of it was so beautifully designed and laid out that I wanted to be a part of it so badly.

Honestly by the end I wanted to quit all my aspirations and ambitions and be a Cirque Du Soleil act. There was another couples’ act that moved and worked together on a beam hung in the air. It was the cutest thing I’d ever seen. And the things that tiny little girl could do were so desirable to me. I wanted to be here. I wanted to dance to that amazing music and hang on that beam.

Long description short, PLEASE go see Cirque Du Soleil. Expand your horizons. There’s really no excuse you could come up with other than you don’t like being awed and amazed. It’s an incredible experience that I hope to have again. And again. And Again. There have many different themes and I plan to see them all. Twice.
