The Most Important Class I'll Ever Take

    By Ana | September 15, 2011

Earlier this week, the women of my sorority and I attended a “teaser” program for OSU Police Department’s RAD program (Rape Aggression Defense). It was called a “teaser” because it only lasted about an hour and a half, while the normal program meets three hours a week for five weeks. Even though it was so short, I learned so much about keeping myself safe on and off campus, in all kinds of situations, and even a couple of kick-butt moves! These classes are free to any woman in Ohio, not just OSU students. That is how strongly OSUPD feels about every woman having the necessary tools to keep herself safe. We also learned that one in four college women will be sexually assaulted by the time she graduates. One in FOUR. The officer talking to my sisters and I counted us all off by fours and had every fourth girl stand up. Looking around the room at all these women I care very much about, representing the 25% of assaulted college women in America, some of whom may no longer even be alive to stand up and be represented, was truly mind-numbing. We all watch Law and Order: SVU. We know what can happen. But this really made it….real.

So I’ve decided to take the RAD program classes one quarter this year. They are on Thursday evenings from 6-9 pm for five weeks. They are offered every quarter, including summer quarter. You can visit their website at www.ps.ohio-state.edu/police/rad for more information and how to register. Class size is limited, so register soon if it fits in your schedule!

I wish all of the women in my life could take this class. Everyone deserves to have the tools to keep themselves safe, wherever they are, and this program empowers you to do that. Who knows? It might save your life.
