2017: The Year of Powerful Women

 Written by    January 3, 2017

Happy New Year everyone!

This past Christmas, I was gifted a really amazing present. My wonderful sister, who once gave me a homemade paperweight, made me a calendar entitled “2017: The Year of Powerful Women,” given my feminist awakening. Each month featured one of my famous female role models (my mother took this opportunity to ask why she was not included in the calendar) with one of their quotes.

It inspired me to write my first blog post of the new year about essentially the most important thing ever: female power. And I think 2017 is the year for that because against all odds, women are strong. In the words of whoever sang the “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” theme song, “Females are strong as hell.” Alternatively, in the words of the ever-brilliant Eleanor Roosevelt, “A woman is like a tea bag; you never know how strong it is until it’s in hot water.” The amalgamation of these two phrases prove that 2017 is, indeed, our year.

Ladies, let’s get in formation (do I need to cite that that’s Beyoncé? Is that even necessary?). Here are my favorite quotes about female power to help you get your 2017 off right.

“We are agents of change, we are drivers of progress, we are makers of peace — all we need is a fighting chance.” – Hillary Clinton

“Some women choose to follow men, and some women choose to follow their dreams. If you’re wondering which way to go, remember that your career will never wake up and tell you that it doesn’t love you anymore.” – Lady Gaga

I think now is our time. My mother was told by everyone that she had two choices: She could be a nurse or a teacher. The external barriers now are just so much lower. If we start acknowledging what the real issues are, we can solve them. It’s not that hard.” – Sheryl Sandberg

“When God created man and woman, he was thinking, ‘Who shall I give the power to, to give birth to the next human being?’ And God chose woman. And this is the big evidence that women are powerful.” – Malala Yousafzai

“The fact that the adult American Negro female emerges a formidable character is often met with amazement, distaste and even belligerence. It is seldom accepted as an inevitable outcome of the struggle won by survivors, and deserves respect if not enthusiastic acceptance.” – Maya Angelou

“Figure out who are you separate from your family, and the man or woman you’re in a relationship with. Find who you are in this world and what you need to feel good alone. I think that’s the most important thing in life. Find a sense of self. With that, you can do anything else.” – Angelina Jolie

Do you see? Are you inspired? Women are capable of anything! To be a woman is to care, to endure, and to have insurmountable strength buried in the very deepest and darkest of places.

And to remind you of the graciousness of women, I will end with this iconic Michelle Obama quote. In all its glory, it reminds me that despite the fear of failure in the face of the heartless cruelty, raw jealously, and alleged ignorance that we can unjustly face as women, we have the power to look beyond it with class. Because “When they go low, we go high.”
