Being an out-of-state student, the question I get asked more than any other is, “so why did you decide to come to Ohio State?”
It’s a question I have thought a lot about over the past year since I made the decision to come here, and as I approach the end of my first year, I think that the answer is clear to me now. I think I can best describe it in three words.
Opportunity. Every day I wake up, get dressed, and head out to class. As I trek across campus, I tend to just observe my surroundings. I look at the massive buildings, at all of the resources available to me, at the thousands of students on their way to do a thousand different things. I see posters for the hundreds of clubs on campus, whose interests range from vinyl club to USG to religious groups to just people who love to eat tacos together. There is literally something for everyone here. On the weekends I take advantage of the opportunities downtown Columbus provides. Ohio State is located in such a unique area, in the sense that it has its own beautiful campus, but also a growing city just a two-minute bus ride away.
Spirit. The sense of community felt by being able to call yourself a Buckeye is indescribable. Everyone that attends this university has so much passion and pride, and not just for the athletics, but for everything that this university represents. The buckeye community spans the globe. Just this summer I saw someone in Frankfurt, Germany wearing an Ohio State shirt, and it made me feel like I am a part of something bigger.
At least we’re not Michigan. Ok, this last one isn’t one word. My bad, but one of the best days of the year is the game against That Team Up North. The Ohio State-Michigan rivalry is one of the best in all of sports. It feels pretty great to be on the best side of the rivalry.
