Life on the Block

 Written by    November 7, 2017

One of the student organizations that I, and many other Buckeyes, dedicate time to is Block”O”!

Block “O”, for those who don’t know, is the student organization responsible for cheering on many of Ohio State’s athletic teams. From hockey to volleyball and soccer to football, members of Block “O” make sure that Buckeye spirit is loud and proud!

Sometimes, during general member meetings, athletes and coaches stop in to hype up the students, telling fun stories from the practice field, and inspiring the student section to rally behind the team for the big game.

Specifically for football games, members will meet a few hours prior to kick off to sort and tape the cards used for the large displays featured during the game in the north and south stands.

Before the UNLV game, Block “O” and Boo Radley got together to pass out free swag to students going to and from classes. I personally loved getting to bring these groups of friends together to make OSU students feel appreciated, and we had a beautiful morning for it!

I think my favorite thing that I’ve gotten to do for Block “O” is paint up! A “Painted Kid” is an individual who willingly wears paint in place of a shirt for the game. They help set up the cards, get covered in paint by members of the executive board, and lead the cheering section (while also finding themselves featured on the big screen).

The first time, I was the letter “T” for #HowSheGonEat? at the Oklahoma game.

Most recently, I was the letter “A” in “Loss Vegas” for the UNLV game.

After we took the group photos, we ran around under the Shoe (with all of the people waiting to get in their seats), cheered for the band, and took our rightful spots at the front of the student sections.

And while you might be thinking “that’s nuts, she must have frozen her butt off,” it actually isn’t that bad if you paint up in the beginning of the season. Sure, it got a little chilly during the fourth quarter of the Oklahoma game, but I got a slight sunburn during the UNLV game so it really depends on the game.

It was awesome getting to experience the Block “O” traditions prior to game day and I’m proud to be a part of the select group of crazy Buckeyes willing to go the extra distance for the game.
