Basketball is Back!

 Written by    February 1, 2018

Last year, I really had no desire to go to Ohio State basketball games. In addition to the arena being far from my building and games being on weeknights, the team could be best described as mediocre. But this year, things have taken a turn for the better. Under the leadership of new coach Chris Holtmann, the Buckeye basketball squad has 18 wins against just 5 losses, and 9-1 against other Big Ten teams. They started the season well outside the top 25 teams in the nation, but to the surprise of many, they have shot up to as high as #13!

When the Buckeyes are performing as well as they have been, the distance and day of the games just seem to matter less, and as a result I have already been to six of our home games, only one of which ended in a loss. I did not expect such an alive and active atmosphere, since Ohio State is not known for being a basketball school. The “Buckeye Nut House” student section lives up to its name, and the cheerleaders do backflips after every free throw to get the crowd pumped up. By far, the most exciting game was the day I came back for second semester. I had great seats right behind the hoop, and although Ohio State was expected to lose to Michigan State, then the #1 team in the country, they cruised to an 80-64 win, and everyone stormed the court at the end of the game! Whether in person or on TV, I am much more pumped to watch Ohio State basketball than I was at this last year, and I can’t wait to see how far they go in the Big Ten Tournament and March Madness.

I was pretty stunned by Ohio State’s upset of #1 Michigan State a few weeks ago. Credit: Ohio State Athletics
