Women Empowerment through Film

 Written by    March 26, 2018

I saw Black Panther just one week after its initial release. Clearly, you’d think I’d have to pay an outrageous price for my movie ticket…WRONG! I purchased my ticket for only $3! How is this possible?? Well, the Office of Student Life has an awesome program called D-Tix (Discount Ticket Program).

Through D-Tix, Ohio State students have the ability to purchase reduced priced tickets for many different events off campus. Reduced tickets can be purchased for movies, concerts, sports games, and art shows. While some events require a lottery process, others can be directly purchased at the Office of Student Life desk in the Ohio Union. Additional information can be found here https://activities.osu.edu/programs/dtix

To see Black Panther, I simply purchased a voucher for the Gateway Film Center at the Office of Student Life Desk. D-Tix allowed me to see a cinematic masterpiece for a very small price. To tell you the truth, I would have paid more to see this incredible film. Black Panther not only did wonders for African American representation, it also gave a new roles to women. There was no damsel in distress because the women in this movie knew how to fight for themselves. As a woman myself, I felt incredibly empowered after watching this film.

The Ohio State University is a place where I, as a woman, feel very capable to take on leadership roles. Even as a first year student, I became the secretary of a club called TerrAqua. Being able to see this film made me realize how lucky I am to be a woman attending this school. I am so fortunate to have so many leadership opportunities where I can make a positive impact on the world. As I continue my career here at Ohio State, I will continue to take on leadership roles. I encourage anyone of any race, gender, or ethnicity to also take on leadership roles. You are capable of anything you set your mind to!
