The Secret Cafe

 Written by    March 13, 2018

If you ever find yourself needing a break from campus food but not actually wanting to go off campus, would it even surprise you if I said Ohio State has the perfect place for that?

The Heirloom Cafe is located in the basement of the Wexner Center for the Arts, right next to the Oval. Because it’s not a campus-run restaurant, and because it’s located in the lower floor of a building that doesn’t hold classes, I don’t know if many students actually know the Heirloom Cafe even exists, let alone how good it is. Fortunately for me, I heard about the cafe from a friend and realized it could be a welcome departure from Kennedy Commons pasta and soft-serve ice cream.

I went to the Heirloom Cafe on Friday for lunch as a self-congratulations for surviving the semester and making it to spring break. I’m a sucker for a good Seinfeld reference, so I felt compelled to order the big salad: a mix of greens, carrots, Parmesan croutons (my favorite part) and balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Everything was delicious, but deciding from their wide array of dessert options was difficult (I settled on a classic chocolate chip cookie.)

Hopefully, the Heirloom Cafe will soon become less of a secret — as long as I can still get a table.

I believe it was the philosopher George Costanza who said “But you had to have the BIG SALAD!”
