Student Org Spotlight: PRSSA (Part I)

 Written by    March 26, 2018

In my first semester at OSU, as I was looking to get involved in a club that would align with my major and help me learn more about a career field I might be interested in, I discovered PRSSA through an opportunities email from the School of Communication.

PRSSA is the Public Relations Student Society of America. I honestly think this is the funniest name because it sounds super legit. I remember initially thinking that whichever former Buckeye had come up with this name must’ve been a little extra.

However, I soon found out that PRSSA is a national affiliate organization of PRSA, the Public Relations Society of America, for industry professionals.

I decided to join despite only being a freshman, and it’s probably the best co-curricular decision I’ve made all year!

In COMM 1100 and COMM 1101, I’ve learned about communication from historical and theoretical perspectives, but I haven’t gotten into much of the content in my pre-major courses.

There’s not too much real-world application of the material yet, and it’s rare in class that I can see myself getting super excited about a job in communications, but here’s where PRSSA has come in.

PRSSA has helped me learn so much about the world of public relations and related fields and has helped me decide to pursue the strategic communication specialization. Because of PRSSA, I have a much better understanding about what kinds of jobs are out there and what I want to pursue as a career.

Here is an example schedule of the meetings we had in February. Photo credit.
