After joining PRSSA last fall (read more about PRSSA
here + here), I joined The PRactice second semester.
The PRactice is Ohio State’s student-run public relations firm affiliated with PRSSA. It gives students the chance to apply what they learn at PRSSA meetings to real world clients.
Yes, The PRactice has real, paying clients; many are Columbus companies and some are different schools or departments around campus. Check out a list of current clients
If you’re new to The PRactice, you’ll work as an Account Associate and be placed on a team led by an Account Executive and Account Supervisor. Your team will work with one or two clients. It’s okay if you’ve never done PR before. There are no prerequisites for this student organization — just be willing to learn!
Last spring I was an Associate for the Center for Automotive Research (CAR). This fall I’m an Executive for the Technology & Youth (a new minor program at Ohio State).
Meetings are Tuesdays from 6-7 p.m. You’ll meet with your team and discuss client work. There’s a lot of flexibility, so you’ll work with your account leads on what skillsets and areas you want to develop or learn more about.
Client work entails a variety of tasks that may include creating video, visual, or written content; event promotion; social media strategy; and content calendar development.
The PRactice is a great opportunity for younger students to gain skills and learn more about the PR/Communication industry without having to take 3000- or 4000-level classes.
I am so glad I joined The PRactice last semester because it helped me learn more about the industry and become more interested in PR. It also helped me with summer internship applications and interviews — I already had experience without having an actual internship as a freshman.
Applications are closed for this semester but will reopen late November for spring semester. It’s a great resource for Ohio State PR students, and I encourage you to apply!
