Over the summer, I interned at Paycor, a human capital management software company headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio. Paycor builds software for small-to-medium-sized companies to assist with their HR needs, including recruiting, hiring, scheduling, onboarding, payroll, tax and benefits.
Here’s a sneak peak into the thoughts of a slightly nervous intern on her first day in May:
As an internal communications intern, I’ll help write employee communications, manage our company intranet and organize events for Paycor associates. I’ll also be planning our Sales and Client Services Kickoff in July.
Paycor is growing rapidly, and the company culture is impressive. In my first week, I helped with our FY19 celebration, where we celebrated employees who were newly hired, promoted or celebrating a company anniversary. Instead of the classic red carpet, we rolled out a carpet in Paycor orange. We handed out commemorative glasses, had a food truck with pizza, wine, beer and outdoor games.
My favorite part of the week was hosting our monthly live webinar where Paycor executives and employees get in front of the company to discuss company updates, news and initiatives. It was neat to see how all the working pieces come together: audio/video, mic and teleprompter setup, scripts, transitions, multiple speakers, etc.
I was also able to edit a confidential communications plan from our executives, create slides for our company TV monitors, sit in on meetings and dive into analytics for our internal internet server. I love working with my team, which is four people including me, because it allows me to get valuable, hands-on experience.
What I love about internal communications is that it touches all parts of the business, and I get to work with employees in nearly every department. My first week went by so fast, and I already feel like I’ve learned so much about the company, my coworkers, the industry and the work Paycor does.
