Greetings from England!!
By Ana | July 8, 2012
It’s been five days, but I’m still having trouble believing I’m waking up in Oxford, England every morning.
There are 20 students total in this Ohio State-University of Oxford Pre-Law study abroad program. We’re earning six semester credits for two courses: Intro to Anglo-American Law and British Law & Society. We’re studying in St. Anne’s College, one of over 25 colleges of the University of Oxford. Oxford is about an hour drive northwest of London. And I love it here. So much, in fact, that I really do not want to come home. Ever.
We’re on the visitor wireless internet network, and it’s not very good, so I’m not able to post photos because it keeps telling me there’s an error. Where are the IT guys from work when you need them?! (Oh, that’s right, in the United States.)
The thing about studying abroad is that you get to know the other students in your program pretty fast. We all get along quite well, and two aren’t even from OSU. So we’ve already planned weekend trips. Next weekend, some of us will be going to Cardiff, Wales. The weekend after that, I’m going to see my sorority sister Kaitlyn in Aberdeen, Scotland, where she is working on her Masters from the University of Aberdeen. She and I are going to spend a day in Edinburgh, too, and she has already planned a visit to a castle and hiking in the highlands! The final weekend in July, several of us are going to Dublin. I’m so excited!
Our pre-law program (there is a group from Ohio State’s Moritz School of Law here, too) has two classes each morning, separated by tea time, then everyone attends a lecture in the evening about British culture and society. Both groups went to Windsor Castle yesterday–I wish I could post these photos! Windsor was gorgeous–this whole country is. (Windsor Castle is one of the Queen’s residences. She was not there when we visited.) We are also going to be visiting Stratford-on-Avon, the Old Bailey, and Parliament.
It’s really an exciting time to be in England. (I’ve already written 12 postcards and have to go get more!) It’s the year of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Wimbledon was today, the British Open is coming up, and the Olympics start on the 27th. Sometimes I have to pinch myself to make sure it’s not all a wonderful dream!
As they say in the UK–cheers!
