Better Late Than Never

 Written by    December 5, 2012

This morning, I visited one of my professor’s office hours for the first time. Dun dun dun…

WARNING: Do not, under any circumstances, wait until the end of the semester to go to your professor’s office hours. Seriously. Don’t wait. I’m learning this lesson first hand so you don’t have to.

(Definition: Office hours are the times your professor or teaching assistant sets aside for his or her students to come in and ask questions, receive clarification, or even just talk.)

His office is in University Hall in a small room teeming with books and has the most gorgeous view of the Oval. It screams “collegiate” like something out of a movie, so I almost couldn’t believe that it was his actual office and not a staged set. I walked in with my paper in hand and a pale, timid face.

We sat down in the only two chairs in the room and he and I comfortably chatted about the class and my previous work. It was so welcoming and surprisingly casual that all my nerves seemed to disappear. I showed him the work I had done for the latest assignment and he took the paper into his hands and silently read.

This was the gut-dropping moment I had dreaded. In my mind I heard his inner monologue: “Oh no, this isn’t good. Can she really expect me to read this? This is the work of a fourth grader. I can’t believe she’s made it into my honors class.” I waited, terrified. He read over the paper several times and looked up at me.

But then he started into helpful criticism. The horns of a bloodthirsty critic didn’t appear on his forehead and he wasn’t punching holes in my paper with a red pen. He simply started giving me advice.

In the end, going to his office hours was the best experience in my academic career here at OSU. I’m feeling a renewed sense of purpose and motivation and less like another glossy eyed student shuffling through the crowds.

Moral of the story: Your professors are there to help you. Visiting their office hours may be scary, but in the end it’s worth the time and effort. Don’t let yourself get lost in the crowds at Ohio State.

(And here’s a little something to get your through finals or even just a rough day.)
