Guidance and preparation

Extensive freshman and sophomore support, advisory support and access to faculty are all part of an Ohio State education.

Ohio State offers an academic environment that's rigorous but supportive. It's a competitive environment designed to prepare students to be leaders in their fields. But those academic standards are matched by our determination to help you succeed.

Find a major you love

With over 200 majors and nearly 500 specializations and minors, Ohio State is ready to match your brainpower to the best course of study you can find. Not sure what to major in? You're in the right place: with so many options, you're sure to find your fit. About 20 percent of first-year students enter Ohio State without a major — and many change majors after a year or two. Academic help and tutoring

Master a tough subject, get feedback on a paper or discuss research strategies with the help of university offices such as the Dennis Learning Center, Math and Statistics Learning Center, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Writing Center, Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry, and University Libraries.

Degree planning

Ohio State students often have multiple academic advisors, including professors and professional staff. This approach means you always have the right person to talk to — you can get advice from someone who is really involved in the program, who knows the ins and outs of requirements, courses and your field of study.

Career planning

To be competitive out of the gate, you want to start thinking early about career or graduate school preparation. Your college's career office is your front line: they'll help you prepare for career fairs, interviews and graduate school applications. Buckeye Careers offers a job and internship database that can be tailored to your interests. Haven’t decided on a career? Career Counseling and Support Services can assist with that.

First Year Experience Peer Leaders are upperclass students who know the ropes of making the transition to college life. You'll meet yours at Orientation.

The jewel in Ohio State's highly ranked library system is beautiful Thompson Library. The Campus Reading Room, which overlooks campus and downtown Columbus, is a favored study spot.
